News
- From "Cool" to "Hot': After stunting with
"American Pie" for a day, State College's Oldies station "Cool
107.9" flips to Rhythmic CHR as "Hot 107.9". The station,
licensed to Port Matilda, is currently retaining the WNCL call letters that
went with the Oldies format, but will flip to WJHT soon. (Posted 1/7/01)
- Oldies and Standards Sign Off in the Susquehanna Valley: Shamokin's
95.3 dumped its satellite Oldies format for a simulcast of Williamsport market
Country station WBYL mid-December. 95.3 formerly sported the WISL-FM
call letters, which have been replaced with WBLJ-FM . Together, 95.3 and
95.5 are known as "Bill Country 95". Also in Shamokin,
satellite Standards-formatted WISL (1480) appears to be off the air. (Posted

- 12/8/01: A couple of changes on the State College
FM Dial went down at midnight
on 11/26: WFGI 94.5 dropped its "Froggy" Country format for
Soft AC as "Lite 94.5", with new call letters WLTS. The "Froggy"
country format can still be heard on WFGY 98.1, which broadcasts from Altoona,
but can be picked up with an average radio in State College. Also, 98.7
Pleasant Gap signs on as WOJZ, broadcasting Jones NAC satellite programming
(a.k.a. Smooth Jazz). 98.7 was previously licensed to Mill Hall in the
Williamsport market, and ran an Oldies format as WLTS. 98.7 had been
dark for months before 11/26.
- 10/27/01: Last Tuesday (10/23) at 1:02PM, 102.3 in Erie ended their
stunting and became Classic Hits "Z102.3" with syndicated duo Bob
and Tom handling mornings. The station's call letters are now WQHZ.
- 10/15/01: A new radio station signs on in Erie, and an old one begins
stunting. WRPL 93.9, Fairview signed on today with an Active Rock format
as "Planet Radio". WLKK 102.3 (formerly WJET, soon to be WQHZ),
a.k.a. "The Point" ends its modern rock format and starts
stunting. The new format will be unvieled on 10/23. (Get it?
10/23? 102.3? Ah, never mind.) Rumors have 102.3 going to
Hot AC with the name "Z 102.3", but CHR is also a possiblity.
- 10/15/01: The Reading, PA AM and FM
Dials are up.
- 10/14/01: The Lancaster, PA FM Dial, Lancaster,
PA AM Dial, York, PA FM Dial, and York,
PA AM Dial are all up.
- 9/27/01: The Philadelphia
Inquirer reports that 900 WURD will return to the air soon with a brokered
format. Click
here to see the article.
- 9/25/01: 92.1 WWKL in Palmyra (Harrisburg
market) is back on the air with an Oldies format as "Fun
92.1". WWKL had been off the air since August 3rd, and returned
last week, stunting with patriotic music. Before the August sign-off,
92.1 was a simulcast of Classic Rock 93.5 WTPA and sported the WNCE-FM
calls.
- 9/25/01: WURD, 900 AM in Philadelphia is off the air, following 3
weeks of stunting with 2 Unlimited's "Get Ready For This".
- 9/1/01: More format-flippin' in the Lehigh Valley as 1470 WKAP flips
from Standards to Oldies to replace the now defunct "Oldies 99.9" as
the Valley's oldies station.
- 8/31/01: Shocker! Eastons's WODE-FM "Oldies 99.9"
flips to classic hits as "The River". Could this trigger more
format flips in the Lehigh Valley? Perhaps WLEV or WEST? For now,
the Allentown, PA FM Dial has been updated
accordingly.
